Work Location: Montgomery County, MD
Summary:
Seeking a consultant pathologist to provide scientific and pathology expertise for translational research supporting oncology drug development, including antibody-drug conjugates and immuno-oncology programs. The role involves collaboration with laboratory scientists and research teams to support tissue-based biomarker studies, pathology interpretation, assay development, and exploratory IHC assessments of nonclinical toxicology tissues.
Responsibilities:
- Deliver pathology expertise for tissue-based biomarker studies in both clinical and preclinical research settings.
- Guide experimental design and interpretation for studies assessing target expression, model suitability, and pharmacodynamic activity.
- Review and interpret H&E, IHC, ISH, immunofluorescence, and multiplex tissue assay slides for biomarker testing and image analysis.
- Support assay development, optimization, troubleshooting, and validation in collaboration with laboratory scientists.
- Evaluate digital pathology and quantitative image analysis outputs, providing quality control and guidance on tissue classification and biomarker scoring.
- Design and support exploratory IHC studies using animal tissues, including marker selection and interpretation of pharmacodynamic findings.
- Integrate tissue-based biomarker findings with clinical, molecular, and nonclinical data to inform research and development strategies.
- Document pathology assessments, scientific decisions, and study status, and communicate findings through reports and presentations.
Qualifications:
- M.D., D.V.M., or equivalent medical or veterinary degree with postgraduate training in human or veterinary anatomic pathology.
- Board certification in Anatomic Pathology by the American Board of Pathology or the American College of Veterinary Pathologists, as applicable.
- Experience in translational pathology, oncology biomarker research, or tissue-based assay development in biotechnology, pharmaceutical, academic, or contract research settings.
- Expertise in histopathology and interpretation of oncology tissue biomarkers.
- Experience evaluating assay performance, establishing scoring criteria, and reviewing tissue-based biomarker data.
- Familiarity with digital pathology and quantitative image analysis, including hands-on experience with HALO software.
- Immuno-oncology experience and exposure to assay development and troubleshooting.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams.
- Preferred: M.D. in Anatomic Pathology with Ph.D. or equivalent research experience in medical science, cancer biology, immunology, or related field.
- Preferred: Experience with antibody-drug conjugate or immuno-oncology development, multiplex IHC/IF, spatial biomarker analysis, and automated staining platforms (e.g., Ventana DISCOVERY ULTRA).
- Preferred: Experience interpreting IHC findings in human and nonhuman primate tissues, including exploratory biomarker assessments in cynomolgus monkey toxicology studies.
- Preferred: Experience overseeing external assay laboratories and reviewing vendor-generated pathology reports.
